I arrived around 12:30 and there were already a line in front of a closed door, no signage, no post, there were nothing indicate that it is a cafe.  I swear if it wasn’t because of the line, I wouldn’t know its a cafe.  People waited patiently and yet excited. Everyone was taking #selfies posting on IG showing off that they were lining up for this infamous but mysterious shop.  Doors opened promptly at 1:00, without further adieu customers were seated accordingly and I was lucky enough to get the last table.  It isn’t a huge cafe, in fact it has less than 15 seats.  Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡

The shop is decorated with artworks and furnitures from Japan, also an area designated for Between Whiles General store which sell some of the good finds from parts of Japan.  The cafe was filled with delicious aroma from the busy kitchen, cakes, cakes and cakes.  Each of the cakes were limited and yea they only have one menu to go around, so you have to wait for your turn to order.  Between whiles is here 時常在這裡

My friend was a bit disappointed as they only offer teas but not coffee, we agreed that it was a right decision for a shop like Between Whiles, but they offer a summer drink menu during summer time.  If you do manage to get a table, it doesn’t mean that you will get all the choice on the menu.  Their cakes were so limited that they sold out before the first round, so yea, it’s playing the I’m hard to get game.   If you want to do take outs be sure to come early, they tend to sold out within an hour or two.  Other than their regular salted butter pound cake ($200) and apple turnover ( $200), they also have a weekly special – the one we had was  sweet potato chiffon cake ($180).

Girls never have enough sweets!!! We ordered three desserts to share between the two of us.  The sweet potato chiffon was layered with creamy mash which was very dense  and it was a strong comparison to the light and fluffy chiffon layer.  I also liked the salted butter pound cake, it was warm and companioned by their fluffy whip.

My friends from Hong Kong always love the pound cake I buy them as souvenirs.  I do always FB message them two weeks before I fly out from Taipei and get my order sorted.

Restaurant or lounge bar? Your choice – LMNT 元素創意廚房

LMNT  元素創意廚房

38 SongShou Road, XinYi Dist (Neo 19) 信義區松壽路28號

When Element drops it’s Es, it’s LMNT!  We had our girls night out here last week, after a long ride.  Originally it should only took us about 20 mins to get there, LOL but we ended up with an hour and a bit.  Though, the ride was long, we seized the moment and it felt like the old time when we had road trips back home.  Such an adventurous trip, guess we just wanna have fun or a getaway is much needed.

I used to club at the LMNT lounge bar and this was the first time I visited their restaurant.  Surprisingly, the place was brightly lit and spacious with ample of mirrors.

LMNT 元素創意廚房 LMNT 元素創意廚房 LMNT 元素創意廚房 LMNT 元素創意廚房

This could also be a perfect place for you and your homies to chill, chitchat and good food double wins.   For us,  we laughed our heads off the entire dinner, hopefully we weren’t too loud.  Girls just wanna have fun.

We set our eyes on the Italian Soda, on the sour side we ordered the grapefruit summer ($180) whereas the yellow kiwi is slightly sweeter.  Our Silly Sally was sipping away her drink, and she went I like the yellow kiwi but… but .. but.. it has soda in it. Our faces dropped and burst into laughter.  She made my day 🙂

Our first dish was Parma Ham and Melon with Homemade Fig ($280), the fig took me by surprise as it was marinated with a special sauce and it added a hint of sourness to it.  If you like Parma Ham I would recommend this.

Followed by the Kimchi SPAM Fried Wonton ($280) if I have to rank my favorite dishes of the night, sorry Kimchi and SPAM you are down at the bottom.  This was basically a fried kimchi wonton the SPAM was only a tiny weeny piece, this was a bit disappointing and wasn’t as wow as the others.  When I spotted Buffalo Wings ($280) on the menu, I was like I want this I want this.  “spicy or original?” All of us said in unison “SPICY!” The wings are too common for lounge bars and I have had some over fried ones before and also those swim inside the sauce.  LMNT’s was cook the way it should, and the meat was still tender and juicy.  Without paying attention, there was a mountain of bones in front of Dino I this proved Dinosaurs are meat eaters.   I liked the wings here, will definitely come back for more.

For mains we ordered two Pizza kinda dish.  Kimchi Pork Pizza ($280)  was something you shouldn’t miss and it was no where near it’s twins at the pizza joint.  When the think crust and deep dish ain’t my cup of tea, thin and crispy crust for the win.  The kimchi went humorously with the extra cheesy, marinated pork and the crust, it gives the pizza most of its flavor and also a bit moist to it.  I gotta admit that I love it and my Dino once again she just couldn’t help herself from eating it.  It will be a perfect match with a cold beer.

Did I say I DON’T LIKE DEEP DISH??? But this one is the UFO deep dish  “hello.. hello… can you hear me, are we gonna land on Saturn soon?” If it can take me to outerspace why not give it a try.  We had  the Sicilian Seafood UFO Deep Dish ($320), this one you gotta eat it when it’s hot.  I quite like this one but not as much as the pizza though, there were plentiful of seafood inside the pie.   Even though it didn’t score as high as the kimchi pizza but I must say the meat sauce inside was da bomb.  We were talking about ordering the sauce along with the seafood and have it with nachos, ummm mouthwatering.

I would recommend all the dishes that we had today except for the deep fried wonton, but if you are a kimchi fans then why not.

Lastly, Miss Photogenic.  This Chestnut Berry Shell Éclair ($250) was a bit disappointing,  it looked yummilcous, once again it was the case of it’s book cover doesn’t match the contents. However, girls need something sweet all the time and a quarter of it wasn’t that bad.  It was on the sweet side and the chestnut and berry taste were a bit mild compare to the sweetness.

We had a great night, girls night out is always a good way to release some of the stress.

Jade Lounge 青隅

After 8 years of wait and Mandarin Oriental Taipei finally opened it’s door in May.  MO Taipei made it’s grand entrance and claiming the title of the first SIX stars hotel in Taiwan.  It adopts the ostentatious and classy style just like others around the world. From Mario Cittadini to Frank Haasnoot and Tony Chi you can tell how much effort and thoughts  the hotel has put in to it’s luxurious name.

Enjoy the full body massage followed by my favorite rose petal jam scone and Strawberry green tea is always my kind of afternoon.  I made reservation for afternoon tea at the Jade Lounge well before the opening day.  However, I had my hopes too high for Jade Lounge, after a few visits to MO, I would say I like  Coco and YaGe the best.

Jade Lounge unlike Cafe Causette in Hong Kong, they have a minimum charge of one tea set ($1250) per person.

They offer three different types of  Tea sets : The three tiers Jade afternoon tea (TWD $1250), Afternoon tea pairing with Ruinart ‘R’ Champagne  (TWD $1900) and The caviar afternoon tea – served with 15g caviar and champagne (TWD $3750)

Menu (click here)

Jade Lounge 青隅 Jade Lounge 青隅 Jade Lounge 青隅 Jade Lounge 青隅 Jade Lounge 青隅I paired mine with my favorite Strawberry green tea, it still tastes the same.  Couldn’t wait till I have my scones here, but they only offer some strange flavors here like raisins, green tea and chocolate.  Where’s my plain scones??

Jade Lounge 青隅 Jade Lounge 青隅

The three tiers came with : sweets, savories, cookies n scones as well as Le Jambon Cru on baguette and petits fours on the side.

I would say the top tier was the best and they tasted as good as their look.

For the Middle tier,  they tasted blend but you can tell that they use fresh ingredients.  I loved the Crab Remoulade with Lemon Caviar and the Egg Mimosa was way too dry;  wasn’t my cup of tea.

Now, onto the worst but yet the ones I had been reminiscing after my last HK trip.  The scones came in random flavor, which left me with nothing but go with the raisins ones.  The scone itself was too dry and floury, it didn’t have the buttery scent like the ones at Smith and Hsu.  Rose petal jam wasn’t on the menu, so they came with Lemon curd and blueberry jam, I asked for whipped cream and had to wait for 25 mins.  The chocolate were a strong finish note , the dark chocolate were to my liking and with a strong cocoa flavor.  Frank Haasnoot made my day.  Overall, I guess an afternoon tea of me, myself n I at the MO won’t be happening in Taipei since scones are never the same and you can’t just order plain scones and Strawberry green tea, but the tea set.

費尼漢堡 Fanier Burger 費尼漢堡 Fanier Burger 費尼漢堡 Fanier Burger 費尼漢堡 Fanier Burger 費尼漢堡 Fanier Burger 費尼漢堡 Fanier BurgerHad been craving for a decent burger for weeks, and my colleagues had enough of me whingeing for food everyday, they decided to stuff me with burgers on a Saturday afternoon after work.

At work, I am famous for leaving my phone and other valuables all over the place and I mean it.  I had my Chrome Hearts ring ran for its life and rolled down the gap of the wooden flooring, and colleagues or visitors retrieved my phone at random places including on a slide in the playground.  LOL That’s me.  On our way to Fanier that day, I was screaming for my phone in the car while it soared down from the car roof.  Now I’m sure that I will make it into the book of record at my workplace.

The split level burger place was brightly lighted with plenty  natural light.   Fanier Burger has long table for family and friends gathering or bar top for one. Fanier Burger

The gourmet burger are freshly made with homemade beef patties, claiming it’s 80% lean with 20% fat’s perfect combination.  The patties were cooked medium well done, and it was less juicier that I had imagined during my 3 weeks crave.

we ordered The  Fantastic $190 which has lettuces, tomato, bacon, cheese, beef and bbq sauce.  The bun was soft and crispy went harmonious with the ingredients , the fillings ain’t overwhelming like some of the burgers you get which you can barely fit it inside your mouth.

I also had the peanut butter, bacon with chicken, you only get a blob of peanut butter for this one unlike some others ones where you get an ample amount  and leaves you with this peanut butter attack.  I prefer the latter, and found this rather run of the mill.  Just like the beef patties the chicken is rather chewy.  I recommend you stick with the burgers at the place,  the steak was not to my liking.

I would still come back to this place for a quick burger fix but before that I am gonna try out the hype Burger & Co, Bravo Burger and BLT.

Being a foodie in Taipei, you will never run short of new restaurants to try out.  With a new trend of American comfort food from EIEIO (Click here) to the lobster bar and the coming soon Queen Cuisine (Click here).

Needed some girl’s heart to heart talk, shopping and comfort food.  Went to the ZhongXiao district with my Boo, and I suggested that we go to The Lobster Bar since I was longing for some comfort food.

The Lobster Bar The Lobster Bar The Lobster Bar The Lobster Bar The Lobster Bar

We arrived really early and the place was empty and after an hour it was full, even the private room. The private room can host up to 10 guests, perfect for friends gatherings and birthday parties.

The Lobster Bar The Lobster Bar The Lobster Bar The Lobster Bar

We ordered the mini rolls ($380 TWD), which came in three different flavors LOBSTER , prawn and crab meat.  Big chunks of lobster meat with the warm buttery bun, need to say more?? I vote went to the lobster roll for sure out of the threesome, it also comes in the regular  portion ($630 TWD).

We also had the lobster bisque ($380) definitely worth the money the creamy bisque had a generous amount of lobster chucks in it.  It had a great depth of flavor and just like other seafood bisque it was on the heavy seasoned side.  This was what you needed on a cold, rainy miserable evening!

Lastly, we had the Lobster ravioli ($620) was perfect for a pasta freak like me.  The al dente ravioli pasta was filled with lobster meat were  swimming in the rich lobster broth.  The ravioli itself didn’t have much flavor but with the sauce, they made the perfect couple.

Steaks by the Steak Master – Danny’s Steakhouse 教父牛排

Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排I walk pass this restaurant everyday and always wanting to go for a steak meal.  Had a few days off last week and yea good food is how I roll.  When you looked into the restaurant from outside, you could only see the bar area and which mislead me into thinking that this restaurant is very quiet and no reservation is needed.  Reality proved me wrong, on a Thursday night and the restaurant was 90% full.Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排 Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排 Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排 Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排 Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排

Just like other top notch restaurants they serve sparkling or still water.  The menu is straight-forward and meals are severed in 5 courses, from starters, soups to desserts.

Danny’s steakhouse doesn’t have a large selections on steak compare to the steakhouses I used to go back home.  They have steaks in these categories: USDA Prime, US Top Cap, US Dry-aged and Australian Wagyu, two different cuts for each category.  I was gonna go for the dry aged as usual but they only have the ribeye and it was in 10 oz portion which was way too big for me.  Turned out that my friend and I ordered the two Top Cap cuts, then onto the starter, soup and side.  it took us a while to order.  Danny’s not only offers steak but other non-beef main courses, since there are always one or two in the party who don’t feel like beef that night.

The Sous Vide Abalone was so good that you couldn’t resist it at all, or Taipei has turned me into a abalone freak.  The Teppan Scallop came in such a small portion which you gulped down in one bite. The Smoked Tomato Soup took me by surprise, I had never have such a rich tomato soup which also had a hint of smokey flavor to it.  The Mushroom Cappuccino on the other hand wasn’t as good as the one they offered at Danny & Company.

Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排 Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排 Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排 Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排 Danny's Steakhouse 教父牛排

We ordered the 8oz Ribeye Top Cap ( TWD 2500) and the 6oz Prime Top Cap (TWD 2800)

I would definitely recommend the Prime Top Cap and the Ribeye was disadvantaged on this occasion.  Ribeye was cooked to rare with the recommendation from the manager, it was juicy and moist, along with a hint of aftertaste.  The steaks were already lightly salted and which you can pair it with the roast garlic to give you this ultimate experience.

For the Prime Top Cap, it had this attractive pink juicy center and it was full flavored.  I couldn’t help but this was so yummylicous .  The steak was succulent yet with a balance aroma, or may be it was just that I haven’t had steak for too long.

We ended the meal with a caramelized pineapple turnover cake with truffle ice cream and carrot cake.  This carrot cake was different from the ones I used to have, I would say I like the pineapple cake more even though it was on the sweet side.

This place is not to be missed if you have tried A-cut and Lawry’s

No.17, Aly.9, Lane 364, Sec.2, Bade Rd 八德路二段346巷9弄17號

Tue – Sun 11:30~15:00、18:00~21:00

This restaurant has been on my must eat list for a while, however, long queues and unexpected shop maintenance had been keeping me away.

After 4 attempts, I am here finally!!! HORRAY

It is located right behind Breeze Center, adjacent to it’s parking lot, kinda hard to find google map would be handy

The owner’s dad didn’t want his son to become a chef that’s why he has been keeping the restaurants as a secret.  I guess now it’s no longer a secret as his enterprise is growing bigger and bigger.  Four restaurants in Taipei and each serves different style of Japanese food

瞞著爹I – Omakase sushi     II – Robatayaki    III – Kaisen Don   IV – Grapefruit Shabu

You had to order you enter the restaurant, they handed you the menu while you were waiting. Dinning here had no such thing of sitting down and think about what you wanna grab for the night.  The menu is quite straight forward, Chawanmushi, Miso soup, Kaisen Don and drinks.

瞞著爹 瞞著爹 瞞著爹 瞞著爹 瞞著爹

The shop was fairly small and cozy so you won’t be able to spend hours in it.  We ordered a combination sashimi Kaisen Don(TWD $520), Chirashi($350), crab meat Chawanmushi($140),clams miso($60), Prawn miso($60), Strawberry soda ($100) and Rose soda ($100).  We have gone overboard with ordering and as you can guess, we could hardly finish them.

The Chirashi was my favorite of the meal the sashimi was fairly fresh and it came with seaweed for you to roast.  Loving it!

I recommend the steam egg, chawanmushi too, it was cook to perfect.  The egg just slide down my throat, and had a strong egg taste to it.

I will defiantly come back in the future as I think it is a place to grab a quick bite when you are by yourself.

A filling dinner on a lazy Sunday – 庫卡咖啡 Kooka Coffee

庫卡咖啡 Kooka Coffee

 No. 5, Alley 57, DaZhi Street 中山區大直街57巷5號

Came to this cozy cafe on a lazy Sunday night for a long chat with my dear friend.

Kooka Coffee is named after Aussie’s native bird Kookaburra, this little chap was the mascot for the 2000 Summer Olympics.  He has a very unique chirp which to be found in a lot of sound tracks, you might not meet him before but I’m sure that you must have heard of his chirp.

This cafe was filled with wooden furnitures just as what you could find in a beachside Aussie cafe.  Post cards on the walls, magazines on the stand, free wifi and power outlets on the wall, you can easily spent your day here.

庫卡咖啡 Kooka Coffee 庫卡咖啡 Kooka Coffee 庫卡咖啡 Kooka Coffee 庫卡咖啡 Kooka Coffee 庫卡咖啡 Kooka Coffee 庫卡咖啡 Kooka Coffee

They have a large selection of drinks, from the usual black coffee to Rum chocolate and prices are relatively cheap compare to the others in this area.

This was my first meal of the day so I went for the colorful cold noodles on the menu.  My friend was second guessing my choice “You sure you want the chinese cold noodle crossover with pesto sauce?” when the east meets the west, either a hit or a miss.  Only $140 (TWD) what do you expect, the homemade noodles wasn’t too bad and the sauce was a bit over with it’s garlic.  Other than this I would say I am satisfy with what I am paying.

My friend gave a thumb up for the Rum Chocolate$140 (TWD) she was having, sorry I would have to say no to my Grapefruit chocolate $130 (TWD). I was expecting fresh grapefruit with the chocolate, longing for the spark of citrus and chocolate, no-no they used the yujacha paste.  Double the sweetness and not my cup of chocolate, their chocolate drink was quite rich thinking of trying the dark chocolate next time.

good thing always come last, Kooka finished strongly with its Moochi waffle.  The waffle was really good even when it was cool the moochi was still soft and chewy.  loving it !!!

Always wanting to try out this celebrity Italian restaurant and their Dazhi branch located just  around the corner from where I am living.

Osteria by Angie Osteria by Angie Osteria by Angie Osteria by Angie

It was a quiet evening and only 3 tables of customers for the whole night, therefore, they had overwhelming number of staff standing around since they have nothing to do.  Oh well, it actually provided some privacy for my friend and I, we were the first one in and last one out..

Osteria by Angie Osteria by Angie Osteria by Angie

I loved the texture of their bread! NOM to go with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  We then ordered one zuppa de pesce  and the waiter immediately asked do we want them to put it in two dishes.  HOLA this is what I call service!! This seafood soup had alot of ingredients in it and it did come in a big portion (note: it is half portion in the photo).  I felt like scallops so we had capesante e asparagi it was seared scollops served with white asparagus and orange sauce.  Scrumptious!  Exactly how I wanted my scallops to be cooked.

For our mains we had Tortelli al porcini and Quattro Funghi Pizza. The tortelli were stuffed with mushroom and cooked with tomato sauce and king prawns, I loved their home made tortelli.  Perfecto !

The pizza we had was topped with four different kinds of mushroom and mozzarella cheese, it was my first time having purely mushroom pizza and it was just my type of thing. I gulped down half of the pizza in no time.

Osteria by Angie Osteria by Angie Osteria by Angie Osteria by Angie

To end, we had their famous Tiramisu and we requested to have the cocoa powder on the side since my friend doesn’t like chocolate.  Not bad but not my cup of tea, will try their homemade gelato next time.

A decent meal and heart-to-heart talk with a good friend.  That’s life

Dawan yakiniku – the best one in Taipei

No. 22, Lane 177, Section 1, Dūnhuà South Road, Daan District

I must say this is the best yakiniku place in Taipei and definitely worth the money ….. This is even better then some yakiniku in Japan
A bit hard to find as they are located in the alley, get off at zhongxiao dunhua station exit 8…. Walk straight …..turn right häagendazs …. Then Turn right and then left again into the nearest alley …. U will see a restaurant with a gingerbread man banner … Dawan is a few shops down

Usually I start off with my favorite lemonade – a freshly squeezed lemon juice, it goes very well with the food
The tofu salad is a must have item – cabbage with Japanese style salad dressing and deep fried tofu cubes
This can freshen you up before the big meal

20120311-105753.jpg

they grill your food right in front of you with this steaming hot bbq the special characoal they use here is the ogatan from Japan

lemons are provided for you to dip your grilled mouth watering food

IMG_0178 IMG_0180

the Ox  with Chives and onion is cooked to medium… you then dip it into your lemon juice a delightful way to start of the meal

This Matsusaka pork are cut into thin pieces and seasoned with salt and pepper

You will be amazed how fresh and juicy it is

IMG_0181 IMG_0182

The tender beef fillet with a special made garlic sauce is my all time favorite.. I can’t leave the shop without having this, its juicy and yet not too fat (except for the sauce may be they have fresh garlic clove with mashed garlic a big block of butter and soy sauce

I perfer having the sauce on it while served rather than have it on the side. I reckon it taste much better this way. nom nom nom

IMG_0183 IMG_0184 IMG_0185

the grilled chicken cartilage.. I admit that the first time trying this do taste a little bit werid as it’s too cruchy for me

With knowing that it contains collagen and protein, I just can’t help eating more.

IMG_0187

another must have dish in Dawan

Cattle streaky with BBQ sauce

the meat is very tender and if you eat it with your rice I can assure you that you can finish the whole plate all by yourself.IMG_0190

IMG_0194

This is the “sabu-sabu” Waygu beef (this is not on the menu but you can ask if they have it for the day) can only be grilled one at a time as they need to turn in consistently within 10 sec and it serve with chives and onion again.  No seasoning so you can taste the meat itself.

My dad can’t help to have to order one more serve after this.

IMG_0195

We finish off with this gigantic prawns

I love eating prawns so to me its an other must have, but for my dad he doesn’t like prawn being grill he said it dries them out

After typing this blog make me wanna go to Dawan again for another meal.
