I arrived around 12:30 and there were already a line in front of a closed door, no signage, no post, there were nothing indicate that it is a cafe.  I swear if it wasn’t because of the line, I wouldn’t know its a cafe.  People waited patiently and yet excited. Everyone was taking #selfies posting on IG showing off that they were lining up for this infamous but mysterious shop.  Doors opened promptly at 1:00, without further adieu customers were seated accordingly and I was lucky enough to get the last table.  It isn’t a huge cafe, in fact it has less than 15 seats.  Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡 Between whiles is here 時常在這裡

The shop is decorated with artworks and furnitures from Japan, also an area designated for Between Whiles General store which sell some of the good finds from parts of Japan.  The cafe was filled with delicious aroma from the busy kitchen, cakes, cakes and cakes.  Each of the cakes were limited and yea they only have one menu to go around, so you have to wait for your turn to order.  Between whiles is here 時常在這裡

My friend was a bit disappointed as they only offer teas but not coffee, we agreed that it was a right decision for a shop like Between Whiles, but they offer a summer drink menu during summer time.  If you do manage to get a table, it doesn’t mean that you will get all the choice on the menu.  Their cakes were so limited that they sold out before the first round, so yea, it’s playing the I’m hard to get game.   If you want to do take outs be sure to come early, they tend to sold out within an hour or two.  Other than their regular salted butter pound cake ($200) and apple turnover ( $200), they also have a weekly special – the one we had was  sweet potato chiffon cake ($180).

Girls never have enough sweets!!! We ordered three desserts to share between the two of us.  The sweet potato chiffon was layered with creamy mash which was very dense  and it was a strong comparison to the light and fluffy chiffon layer.  I also liked the salted butter pound cake, it was warm and companioned by their fluffy whip.

My friends from Hong Kong always love the pound cake I buy them as souvenirs.  I do always FB message them two weeks before I fly out from Taipei and get my order sorted.

Took a stroll after church on a Sunday afternoon.  MinSheng District is always fun to hang out and explore, an area full of new and tiny cafes and stylish shops.  You gotta check it out every now and then,  to keep up the the vibe.  My friends were doing their street performance while we waited to be seated.

postcards, stickers, collectables, scenery frames etc etc, they had fitted alot of things in this tiny cafe.  There must be something unique to this cafe in order for them to survive in the central cafe district (can’t believe how many cafes are there in this area).  They have special coffee arts and home style japanese curry, not to mention that rice comes in dolphin or rabbit shapes. Their cakes are pretty good too since it was the strawberry season, we ordered the strawberry cake.  The soft and fluffy sponge cake came with big n juicy strawberries, a good companion for your matcha latte.

Be sure to try out their Chocolate banana tart, ($120) chocolate sauce dripping down from the banana tower.  It was soo guuuud, sad that my friends ain’t the banana type of person so we gave it a skip this time.

With plugs and free wifi you can surely spend your afternoon there.

A filling dinner on a lazy Sunday – 庫卡咖啡 Kooka Coffee

Came to this cozy cafe on a lazy Sunday night for a long chat with my dear friend.

Kooka Coffee is named after Aussie’s native bird Kookaburra, this little chap was the mascot for the 2000 Summer Olympics.  He has a very unique chirp which to be found in a lot of sound tracks, you might not meet him before but I’m sure that you must have heard of his chirp.

This cafe was filled with wooden furnitures just as what you could find in a beachside Aussie cafe.  Post cards on the walls, magazines on the stand, free wifi and power outlets on the wall, you can easily spent your day here.

They have a large selection of drinks, from the usual black coffee to Rum chocolate and prices are relatively cheap compare to the others in this area.

This was my first meal of the day so I went for the colorful cold noodles on the menu.  My friend was second guessing my choice “You sure you want the chinese cold noodle crossover with pesto sauce?” when the east meets the west, either a hit or a miss.  Only $140 (TWD) what do you expect, the homemade noodles wasn’t too bad and the sauce was a bit over with it’s garlic.  Other than this I would say I am satisfy with what I am paying.

My friend gave a thumb up for the Rum Chocolate$140 (TWD) she was having, sorry I would have to say no to my Grapefruit chocolate $130 (TWD). I was expecting fresh grapefruit with the chocolate, longing for the spark of citrus and chocolate, no-no they used the yujacha paste.  Double the sweetness and not my cup of chocolate, their chocolate drink was quite rich thinking of trying the dark chocolate next time.

good thing always come last, Kooka finished strongly with its Moochi waffle.  The waffle was really good even when it was cool the moochi was still soft and chewy.  loving it !!!

I have been planning on this post for so long.  As most of you know that Dazzling has always been my to go place for all my friends visiting me.  I love their toast, fries and fruit tea, one of my good good friend said that she is gonna prove me wrong and claimed that Perfume dance is way better.  That was why I had such a high expectation on it I woke up early for that day’s meet up and planned well ahead that I am gonna compare it with Dazzling on my blog.

Perfume Dance 跳舞香水 Perfume Dance 跳舞香水 Perfume Dance 跳舞香水Perfume dance looked abit worn out and it wasn’t as magical as I saw on other blogs, which was a bit of shock.  However, it has a better location than Dazzling Deluxe, and shares a similar location with Dazzling Pink and Mint.  Dazzling Deluxe is fairly new and located in the luxe shopping mall – Breeze Center, as well as Dazzling is owned by Janet Yang a girl from the Upper East side. dazzling cafe 玳思琳蜜糖吐司專賣店 dazzling cafe 玳思琳蜜糖吐司專賣店 dazzling cafe 玳思琳蜜糖吐司專賣店

Perfume Dance has this mask area which allow all the their customer to put them on for photos, but the masks looked like they have been lying there for a long and weren’t taken good care of.

Both places have open bar areas, Dazzling was sparkling clean and everything lined up nicely.  Whereas, Perfume Dance it was a relative tiny space and they squashed the everything in there with several honey toast was being made at the time when I went pass.  It felt like a worker working on assembling a product in a factory.

Let’s look at their drinks first.  I ordered fruit tea on both occasions, for the most fair and square comparison.  Uh-oh the Perfume Dance one wasn’t my cup of tea my friends said I looked like I was gonna puke, it had this super strong taste of preserved plum, which is not my type of food.  The tea had a tint of bitterness to it not as fruity as the others in town.  Both of the fruit teas had fresh fruit pieces in it, Perfume Dance was more generous on the fruit pieces which they had lime, oranges, strawberries, and passion fruits, Dazzling on the other hand only had grapes, apples and orange.

Perfume Dance 跳舞香水 Perfume Dance 跳舞香水 Perfume Dance 跳舞香水Perfume Dance 跳舞香水Dazzling’s fruit tea is my all time favorite even thought on some occasions I do found it a little bit too sweet, but overall it’s fresh and never goes wrong, I like the one at Melange Cafe , too.

none of us finished our drinks at Perfume dance, but for Dazzling I think my cousin finished hers in no time.

Here comes the best part, HONEY TOAST!!!! Let’s have a look at them

Perfume Dance 跳舞香水Perfume Dance’s looked very dreamy like a floating raspberry fountain, I admit that I was attract to it.

dazzling cafe 玳思琳蜜糖吐司專賣店Dazzling’s was a big chunk of toast with ice cream and fruits decoration on top of it.  It doesn’t have the WOW factor.

Perfume Dance 跳舞香水 Perfume Dance 跳舞香水 couldn’t wait to try it!!! The first bite was fair but as you ate it, it tasted very artificial as it was actually made out of syrup , runny ice cream and flavored powder along with a few pieces of raspberries.  The toast itself was to churchy to match with the soft and liquid companion. The four of us couldn’t finish it at all.

dazzling cafe 玳思琳蜜糖吐司專賣店 dazzling cafe 玳思琳蜜糖吐司專賣店 dazzling cafe 玳思琳蜜糖吐司專賣店

Dazzling Cafe they think outside the box, they left the toast on the table for you to take pictures with it and you can wave down their waitress after you done with all fb pics, instagram pic, weibo pics and twitter pics.  Then, they would disassemble the whole thing and lined them up neatly on the plate. The toast you can choose soft or crunchy, but it wasn’t as dry as Perfume dance’s.  This one actually tasted better as it had ice cream, more fruit pieces, custard and honey to accompany the toast.  My cousin and I finished the whole thing including the hard crust walls.

Overall, for taste, environment and services I vote for Dazzling Cafe, Perfume Dance was just too disappointing.

On a side note, Dazzling does have different collaborations with different brands, while the Hello Kitty crossover is still happening, they have redecorated Dazzling Deluxe for the new Mercedes Benz x Dazzling theme.  Great thinking to attract customers !!!!

Last but not least, Photo’s courtesy of my dear friend Food and Crits, sharing some of the Perfume Dance photos with me 🙂

Kireikan located on the intersection of the MingShui Road and LeQun 2nd Road, in there you can find Happy Hair salon, Wellcome supermarket, some restaurants and cafes as well as the famous bakery Le Goût.

As usual, I went to Happy Hair for my monthly hair spa early in the morning and I decided to have my lunch at Maru Cafe.  I walked pass this cafe all the time but had never give it a try.

On a Saturday afternoon, it was so quiet in the tiny mall but yet it was busy at Maru Cafe, waffles, coffees, orders from the salon and massage place.

They have a large selection on coffee, no kidding … 2 pages of coffee.  My friend ordered her Vanilla Latte (TWD $160) while I am trying out the Melon Chocolate (TWD $160).

The Melon chocolate took me by surprise it had a very strong Melon flavor and which went harmonious with the chocolate, the wipe cream was smooth and milky.  My first sip of melon chocolate and I will never forget what it tastes like.

Maru Cafe Maru Cafe Maru Cafe Maru CafeWe ordered Tuna Salad Sandwich with Honey Mustard (TWD $180)  which came in a big big portion, I doubt that one can finish this whole thing.  It had lettuces loads of it, tomatoes,  and sprouts… the egg salad which came with it had a hint of mustard flavor.

Our dessert of the day was the mango overload waffle (TWD $200). This scrumptious waffle had a big blob of ice cream and tones of mangoes .  The sweet sweet mango in Taiwan is definitely a highlight compare to those tasteless ones I used to have in New Zealand.  The mochi.  It was my first time trying out the mochi waffle and love it.  It remained soft and chewy even when it was cold.

It was our lucky day, we went to the Neihu branch and only waited for about 15 mins.  I think that was my shortest wait.  I love this place just for its environment and it had some new dishes on their menu.

we ordered the Second Floor House burger (NTD 280). The double deck burger was definitely worth the money we were paying, It had beef patty , john dory fillet, ham, lots of veggie and honey mustard sauce.  The french fries came in a cute container and it was way better than the fries we got from other places, on the side it had a tiny portion of coleslaw to ensure a balance diet.

My friend ordered the Madrid Sausage Seafood Rice (NTD 330) and for $120 you can get bread for the day, salad and a drink.  She had the M&Ms milkshake and it looked very drooling.  The rice was curry flavored and with tones of parmesan cheese and surprise surprise that they went well together.  There were loads of seafood as well and my friend kept saying that for this price you wouldn’t be able to get this in Hong Kong.  That’s what I love about Taiwan, you can get decent food at a reasonable price.

This is a cafe opened by three top baristas  in Taiwan.

Not only have good coffees and I reckon the meals ain’t bad either strongly recommend the waffle with moochi.

Rahdesign used to be quiet and I could spend my afternoon there with a good book or my Macbook.  They provides plugs and Wifi like most of the cafes in Taipei.  With its growing popularity it becomes more crowded and the noise level climbs up as well.

Rahdesgin cafe Rahdesgin cafe

Their lunch set comes with soup / salad and a drink, dessert only cost $30 more.  We didn’t get our dessert this time as they have forgotten about it :(.

I ordered Chicken Fungus Risotto, their risotto is a must try the texture was just right not too soggy like most of the Taiwanese restaurants.

My friend had Macaroni cheese, it was a bit too cheesey and rich.  I can only manage to slurp down half of it.

Here comes my favorite coffee hazelnut Latte and my friend order Lychee Liqueur Latte which is good too. double thumbs up for their coffee.

good cho’s 好丘

address: 54 SongQin Street, XinYi Dist 信義區松勤街54號

02-2758-2609

On a rainy weekday lunch I decide to come to Good Cho’s for my thirst of good bagels and a decent brunch (not those at Dante coffee please)

This place was the XinYi public assembly hall and now it’s transformed into a cafe and a market place on the weekend.  Here is full of heritage colours in addition to the interesting history story my student told me the other day

Stupid me didn’t make a reservation and wasn’t expecting to have a full house on a weekday afternoon, since I didn’t had any breakfast I grabbed some ice cream from Midori while i waited to be seated

my stomach wasn’t handling too well when it saw this huge line of bagels… it tumbled and tumbled~ shhhhhhh~~~

at last got my seat and since I was starving I go straight to the menu and order the veggie egg bagel with the additional meal option for an extra $300 (include: a drink, salad/ soup, dessert)

The bagel was mouth watering and yet nutritious.  inside the original bagel – creamy egg with onion, tomato, mushroom and capsicum when it arrived it was still sizzling hot.  This was very filling indeed.

Don’t forget to visit the Simple Market at the square on the weekends.

Akumacaca – a cafe with personality

Came to Akumacaca for a coffee break on a sunny afternoon.  The name of this cafe reminded me of Hakuna matata from Lion King, haha “no worries !”

106台北市大安區四維路14巷6號  B1樓

No. 6, Lane14 Siwei Road Daan Dist.

02-2701-9227

It’s a cosy cafe and held different exhibitions from time to time.  I spent my whole afternoon here with my good book, since it was a weekday afternoon the place was extra quiet.

They tried to make everything unique to this cafe. Akuma is the name of the interior design company’s name which is located on the 1/F, and later on the owner wanted to make good use of the basement that’s why he opened up AkumaCaca.

They used this tilted glass for water, this not all there are more to come.

This was the most innovative design of coffee cup that I have ever seen.  I was told that this was design by the owner and asked a factory to make it specially for them and each set has its own number.  My cup of the day was No. W023, you must be wondering where is the handle of the cup. TA-DA

It was specially designed and look at the saucer and the bottom of the cup, the cup wasn’t flat at all so you wouldn’t be able to put it on the table.  Even when you put it on the saucer you needed to put in on the right angle that it was designed, otherwise, you will spill the whole thing.  Enough about the design, the coffee I ordered was Mochaccino I like the portion of chocolate, milk foam and coffee, they were just right.  However, the caramel  syrup on top made the whole thing a bit too sweet.

I ordered the home made scone to go with my Mochaccino, the scone itself was a bit too dry.  Nonetheless, to top it up I got to eat it with cream YES!!! CREAM!!!! In Taipei they generally provided you butter to go with your scone.  I missed my wiped cream scone sooo much so for two scones I used two plates for whip cream.  Accordingly to to the waiter the jam was homemade too I had this blue berry jam for that day it is a bit sour but a perfect combination with the scone and cream.  Bravo!!

The scones came on a “L” shaped plate which is quite unique.  You must be thinking what this pink thing is??? It’s actually their name card they designed it by drawing the map on the card and cut it out, every now and then they will change the colour too.

This cafe is definitely worth the visit, will surely return some day.
